Stressed-out New Yorkers are flocking to these urban oases where they’re welcomed into stress-reducing yoga classes by the aroma essentials, candle-lit rooms and inspirational yoga instructors who help guide them to their inner nirvana. The spas’ classes are kept small—never more than 10 people—and affordable, at only $17 for a 75-minute session. To set itself apart, the Oasis Spa offers fun takes on yoga with popular offerings like the Aroma Yoga class, which has proven to be a hit with the Park Avenue crowd, with many classes filled to wait-list capacity.
At the Oasis on Park, the busy hustle of the city is left far behind as students descend into the subterranean cocoon of the round relaxation area before finding a spot in the 450-square-foot, candle-lit, carpeted yoga room, where the air and mats are misted with aromatherapy oils. The Aroma Yoga class begins with each student choosing either lavender or a grounding blend of organic, handmade aromatherapy oils, which they rub on their hands and feet to prepare them mentally, physically and emotionally for the class. Beginning students need not worry if they can’t master the one-legged king pigeon pose or Bharadvaja’s twist; the certified yoga instructors are careful to adapt classes to the students’ level of expertise.
Head yoga instructor Bridget Shields, who once offered aromatherapy workshops as well as yoga, says she decided to merge the two and, hence, Aroma Yoga was born. Since the change, classes have been filling up with regular clients, bridal parties and corporate entities looking to entertain small groups.
Oasis also offers a variety of stress management corporate packages. And this just in: The spa will soon be offering massage, skin care, waxing, nail care, hair care and makeup in a 900-square-foot setting at New York’s John F. Kennedy Airport Jet Blue terminal.
