The six hours and six treatments of the $335 Ultimate Relaxation package sounded
like a one-day vacation. And I needed it. Seething from city stresses, I checked
in and let the soothing, smiling staff take over. My first excursion was a half-hour
aromatherapy mas sage; ace therapist David Zongaro began with reflexology, kneading
my aching feet into willing submission. Moving slowly up my body, his undulating
strokes calmed my twisted, knotted muscles. Suitably stupefied, I shuffled to my
next treat: a seaweed body wrap. Pleasant smelling, vitamin-loaded goo was slathered
over me (the mix contains ginkgo extract and vitamins A, C and E to draw out toxins
and nourish the skin). Once basted, I was swaddled in heated blankets, and I basked
in a sleepy haze as the lovely Lumi rubbed my feet and scalp. A thorough European
facial ensued. Using the spa's own Douceur products, she extracted urban grime from
my neglected pores, leaving me with clear, glowing skin. Next came a leisurely pedicure;
no, tootsies were primped and clipped as I watched robe-clad companions napping while
their feet were similarly spoiled. Ravenous from cosseting, I elected to eat my spa
lunch-I chose a grilled chicken panino, delivered from a local gourmet deli-there and
then (instead of in the lounge area, stocked with herbal teas, magazines and candies).
While my toenails dried, my wimpy, fine hair was washed and styled into a flicked,
sassy 'do. And then, with a flurry of makeup brushes, Alexandra made me over into a
wide-eyed vixen, with a wanton pout and high cheek- bones. After reluctantly pulling
on my clothes, I finished the day with a manicure, and the transformation from stressed-out
city dweller to blissed-out glamour-puss was complete. Floating through the door, I realized
that- apart from selecting lunch, nail color, and blowout-I hadn't had to think about
anything all day. A vacation indeed. - Clare Lambe

The Scene
Tucked away underground, this spa feels like a light and airy retreat
from the bustle above. The staff is pampering but not intrusive, and the
emphasis is on good treatment more than funky attitude. Nevertheless,
the clientele includes a fair number of models, who flock for Martha's
eyebrow ministrations or the superb facials from Ela Molczan, Allure's
owner. Clean and cheerful, it's the perfect place to touch yourself up
for the rest of the week.
The Services
Allure really does do it all, top to bottom, from hairstyling to
pedicures. Specialties include top facial treatments, including a
glycolic acid application at a super-effective 50-percent concentration,
typically found only in doctor's offices. The bikini waxes--Brazilian or
otherwise--have developed quite a following. One of the first salons in
town to use the famed SUN products, Allure's bronzing treatments will
have everyone wondering if you spent last weekend in Jamaica.
